What a hydration drip actually does
An IV hydration infusion introduces prescribed fluid into a vein through a small cannula. The useful question is whether you need intravenous replacement and what volume is safe for you. Feeling busy, tired or thirsty by itself does not establish that need. A hydration consultation starts with your symptoms, recent fluid losses, ability to drink and relevant health conditions.
Choosing the route
Drinking fluids is often a practical first step for mild dehydration when you can keep them down. Oral rehydration solutions can be relevant after fluid losses. IV treatment may be considered when assessment shows oral intake is insufficient or unsuitable. Heart or kidney conditions can change the decision and the amount of fluid that can safely be given.
A home hydration visit
Tell the team whether the concern followed travel, heat, exercise or illness. Bring a medication list and explain any recent vomiting, diarrhoea or reduced urine. Do not select a fluid volume or add extra vitamins from a menu. Persistent or worsening symptoms may need a facility with testing and closer monitoring rather than a routine mobile visit.
Questions to bring to your consultation
- What is the reason for the proposed care, and could another approach be more suitable?
- Who is responsible for assessment, prescribing and monitoring, and how can I verify their professional status?
- What is the complete price in KES, expected appointment time and follow-up plan?
Questions before you choose
Can I simply drink water instead?
Often you can. The clinician should explain why an IV route would be needed and whether drinking or oral rehydration is suitable for your symptoms.
Does hydration mean a vitamin cocktail?
No. Fluid replacement and nutrient supplementation are separate decisions. Ask what is in the bag and why each ingredient is proposed.
