Iron is a clinical replacement treatment
An iron infusion is different from a general nutrient drip. It should be considered in relation to iron deficiency, its cause and whether oral replacement is appropriate. A low-energy feeling alone is not enough to choose intravenous iron. Bring relevant blood results and any referral or treatment history.
Investigate the reason, not just the number
The clinician needs to understand symptoms, blood loss, diet and other possible explanations for deficiency. Tell them about prior iron treatment, reactions and current medicines. An infusion does not remove the need to investigate why iron is low or to plan follow-up.
Setting and observation must be confirmed
Iron preparations and monitoring requirements vary. Do not assume an ordinary home wellness visit is suitable or that one session completes treatment. The responsible clinician must confirm the product, prescription, setting, observation and response plan before booking. A facility-based recommendation may be the better next step.
Questions to bring to your consultation
- What is the reason for the proposed care, and could another approach be more suitable?
- Who is responsible for assessment, prescribing and monitoring, and how can I verify their professional status?
- What is the complete price in KES, expected appointment time and follow-up plan?
Questions before you choose
Can I book iron without blood tests?
The clinician needs adequate evidence of the need and relevant assessment. A menu selection is not a prescription.
Is iron available as a routine home add-on?
Do not assume so. It requires a separate clinical and setting decision, subject to confirmation.
